College: An American dream or a financial nightmare? The increases in tuition affecting today s generation of college students remains a subject worth discussing. If you are a college student or plan on pursuing higher education in the years to come, inflation rates directly influence your tuition. It s important to understand why tuition rates continue to exceed inflation. A majority of contributing factors are discussed in this paper. In 2008 the real estate market took a turn for the worst. The recession lasted until 2009, and the somber trickling effect of this matter resulted in increasingly high numbers of unemployment. The loss of jobs forced influence of frugal spending in almost every aspect of the economy; however, according to James D Tschechtelin in the Increased Enrollment + Student Success – Funding = ? states the estimated growth admission in community colleges grew 16.9 per- cent between 2007 and 2009(50). Continuing research in The Pew Research Center study showed that in 2014 Just under 11.5 million students, or 39.6% of all young adults ages 18 to 24, were enrolled in either a two- or four-year college in October 2008.(2) As enrollment has grown, tuition has too increased.
